Kunal Kamra Eknath Shinde Controversy: Comedian Claims Over 500 Threat Calls After Viral Joke

Stand-up comedian Kunal Kamra has found himself at the centre of a growing political storm following a recent performance in Mumbai, which allegedly targeted Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The Kunal Kamra Eknath Shinde controversy took a serious turn as the comedian revealed he received more than 500 threatening phone calls, including chilling death threats, after a video of his set went viral on social media.

Kunal Kamra Alleges Threats and Harassment

According to a report by NDTV, Kamra’s phone number was leaked online, leading to a barrage of hate messages and calls. Several callers reportedly threatened to kill him or “cut him into pieces” over the joke, which was interpreted as a veiled jibe at Eknath Shinde. The controversial joke involved a comedic twist to the lyrics of the Bollywood classic Dil Toh Pagal Hai, performed at a comedy club in Mumbai’s Khar area.

Though Kamra never mentioned Shinde by name, the Kunal Kamra Eknath Shinde controversy quickly gained momentum online, drawing criticism and concern from multiple quarters.

Police Summon Kunal Kamra for Questioning

In response to the rising tension, Mumbai Police have officially summoned Kunal Kamra for questioning regarding the alleged remarks. However, the comedian has requested a week’s time to appear before authorities. A senior police officer confirmed that an investigation into the threats and the original complaint is ongoing, and that Kamra’s safety is being taken seriously.

The Kunal Kamra Eknath Shinde controversy has not only ignited political tensions but also raised concerns about freedom of speech and expression for artists and entertainers in India.

Political Voices Speak Out in Kamra’s Support

Adding a layer of complexity to the situation, Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction) leader and MLC Eknath Khadse defended Kamra’s right to express himself.

“Kunal Kamra is a comedian, and sometimes in comedy, truth is spoken in jest. The Constitution grants every citizen the right to freedom of speech,” Khadse told ANI in an interview.

He continued, “If what Kamra said is inappropriate, investigate it. But don’t stop him from speaking. Let there be a response, not repression.”

However, Khadse also cautioned Kamra about the boundaries of satire. Referring to the backlash from Shiv Sena supporters, he stated,

“Kamra should also be mindful of his language. Below-the-belt comments are not acceptable, even in comedy.”

Damage and Reactions from Shiv Sainiks

The Kunal Kamra Eknath Shinde controversy escalated as Shiv Sena supporters reportedly expressed their outrage over the performance. There were reports of verbal threats and calls for strict action against Kamra from the party’s loyalists, further fueling the political drama. Some claimed Kamra had “insulted” their leader and demanded retribution, prompting law enforcement to intervene.

While there were no confirmed reports of physical harm, the cyber harassment and volume of hate directed at the comedian have sparked debates about online bullying and the targeting of artists for political satire.

Freedom of Speech vs Political Sensitivity

The Kunal Kamra Eknath Shinde controversy has once again highlighted the growing tension between artistic freedom and political sensitivity in India. While comedians like Kamra use satire to comment on current affairs, their words often come under intense scrutiny, especially when linked to political figures.

Kamra is no stranger to controversies, having previously faced legal and social backlash for his outspoken views on various political issues. However, this incident appears to be one of the most serious, considering the volume of threats and the legal implications involved.
